Vietnam, EU Strengthen Ties

(MENAFN) Vietnam and the European Union have elevated their bilateral relationship to a "comprehensive strategic relationship" as of Thursday, coinciding with the visit of EU Council President Antonio Costa to meet Vietnamese President Luong Cuong in Hanoi.

The announcement was made during a joint press briefing, according to a statement from the EU Council. Both leaders emphasized that this new status represents a significant step forward in their cooperation across multiple domains.

Costa highlighted that "this upgrade fully captures the depth and breadth of our collaboration to date, and our expectations for its future evolution – on trade, on green and digital transition, on security, on people-to-people ties" — emphasizing that it also demonstrates "how closely our future is now linked."

He further described the EU and Hanoi as "reliable and predictable partners, united by a strong commitment to the international rules-based order, to multilateralism, and to peace and stability," in a post shared on social media platform X.

According to a council statement, Costa noted that "at a moment when international rules-based order is under threat from multiple sides, we need to stand side by side as reliable and predictable partners."

He added that the partnership is not only focused on fostering shared prosperity but also on ensuring the credibility of international norms: "It is about developing spheres of shared prosperity. But it is also about the credibility of international rules. That is why our partnership matters beyond our own regions."

This development marks the first time the EU has established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in Southeast Asia, reflecting a deepened commitment to collaboration and regional stability.
